Washington, DC Heat Causes Abraham Lincoln's Wax Statue to Melt
Worldwide heat records are being broken during the summer months of this year. There is a heatwave affecting many sections of the USA, with temperatures much above average. Over the weekend, a six-foot-tall wax monument of the former US President Abraham Lincoln melted due to the extremely high temperatures.
The Lincoln Memorial replica statue partially disintegrated on Saturday when the mercury reached 37 degrees Celsius. The statue's legs broke off from its torso, and its head and right foot melted.
Artist Sandy Williams IV created the statue as a piece for her 40 ACRES Archive: The Wax Monument Series.
The statue was supposed to melt, representing the idea that nothing is "untouchable" or permanent. It's interesting to note that a lot of people are taking the melting monument to be a warning about climate change.
In February, Sandy Williams IV gave East City Art an explanation of the melting wax statues' purpose, stating, "I am interested in visualizing change and building monuments able to keep a living record of activity." The melting of these wax replicas of well-known landmarks gives people control over otherwise untouchable shapes.
The sculptor has already created monuments of notable people, including President Thomas Jefferson and the Confederate generals Robert E. Lee, J.E.B. Stuart, and Stonewall Jackson. A lot of these wax figurines have candle wicks attached, so people may interact with them by setting them on fire.
